Step right up! Some of these wickedly good links might spin a little extra carnival cash my way at no extra cost to you. Fear not, we only recommend products that have survived our house of horrors!
Just like Dr. Oddfellow needed the cane of souls to gain immortality, you’ll need to equip your kitchen with the right tools to recreate this distorted dish! Luckily, the list is pretty short!
A Good Pot & A Good Skillet: All that is really required for this recipe is a pot to boil the hot dogs in, and a skillet to toast the confetti buns in. The Caphalon 10 piece set available on Amazon has thousands of great reviews, and best of all, it’s non-stick!
A Whisk: If you don’t have a whisk you can always just use a fork to stir things together, however the OYV Silicone whisk set has great reviews, will provide more efficient mixing, and can be used safely in your non stick pots and pans!
Unleash the Carn-“Evil”: Assembly Instructions
Bubblegum Mustard? – Vomit or Tolerate?
The bubblegum mustard is by far the most questionable (read: worst) part of the Carn-Evil hot dog. This mustard is what makes people either immediately want to vomit, or just go “meh”. There is no in-between. If you are afraid you’ll be on the vomit side of the scale, feel free to just use food coloring to dye your mustard a fun color. Alternatively, you can add 1/4 -1/2 of the amount of bubblegum flavoring called for. But, for those brave enough, this is how you’ll make your bubblegum mustard.
In a medium sized bowl empty out the contents of your mustard bottle, adding a little water and shaking if necessary to make sure you get all the mustard out of the bottle.
Then, add as much neon pink food coloring as necessary to reach your desired color. Remember you are mixing yellow and pink together, so you’ll probably end up with a pink-y orange color. Do NOT try and add purple to cancel out the yellow . . . we tried this and it resulted in a very flesh-toned, foundation-y tint.
Next, add 24 drops of Lorann Super strength Bubblegum flavoring. I do not recommend that you add more than this, as the bubblegum flavor continues to develop the longer it sits.
Using a funnel, or a lot of patience, add your now flavored and colored mustard back into it’s bottle so it is easier to put on your hot dog. Set it aside until you are ready to assemble.
Bubble and Boil – Heating the hot dogs :
In a medium size pot, add 3 cups of hot water and 3 tsp of beef bullion. If you are using regular hot dogs instead of red snappers, add red food coloring to the pot as well. Whisk together until all the food coloring (if using) and beef bullion are dissolved. Bring to a boil. Add your hot dogs and cook for 6-7 minutes.
Roast & Toast:
While the hot dogs are boiling, cut your hot dog buns in half lengthwise, making sure not to cut all the way through. Butter the inside of the hot dog bun, and place into a screaming hot pan over high heat.
Using your hand to gently press the bun into the pan, keep it constantly moving in circular motions in the pan for 10-20 seconds, remove from the pan to discover a golden brown and perfectly toasted bun!
Assembling the Carn-Evil Hot Dog:
Once all your prep work is complete, it is time to assemble! Put your toasted bun on a plate, and line one side with kool-aid pickles. Then remove a dot dog from your pot and add it in the middle of the bun. Pull out your bubblegum mustard and artfully decorate your dog. Lastly, finish up your assembly by topping with a handful of potato sticks!
