To perfectly blend and store your Creole seasoning, consider these kitchen essentials:
1. Spice Grinder or Mortar and Pestle
While not necessary, if you want your DIY Creole Seasoning to have a fine texture, then a spice grinder or mortar and pestle will really help! We prefer the spice grinder (it’s just quicker with less effort). However, a mortar and pestle will always work, even if the power is out! The Cuisinart Spice grinder has thousands of great reviews on Amazon, and even comes with a lid for storage. However, if you are more of a manual person, this mortar and pestle set from Laevo is reversible (two sides). It also has a two cup capacity for those big batches!
2. Mixing Bowls:
You’ll need something to mix your spices in! Any mixing bowl you have will be fine, but if you’re in the market for a new set, these glass bowls from Superior have lids!
3. Measuring Spoons:
While you can totally eyeball everything, you definitely don’t want to overdo the salt! If you’re in the market for a new set of measuring spoons, then the magnetic measuring spoon set from Spring Chef is great!
4. Airtight Spice Jars
You’ll need something to store your DIY seasoning in, and to ensure optimal freshness we recommend something with an airtight lid! The SWOMMOLY spice jars come with airtight lids and caps with two different dispensing options (sprinkle or pour).
5. Funnel
Funnels can be helpful for transferring your spice mix, ESPECIALLY if you’ve used the Ghost Pepper Salt (that stuff can BURN). The SWOMMOLY spice jars linked above come with a funnel, but if you want something that helps save space, you can opt for the KongNai collapsible funnel set.
Instructions
1. Combine the Spices
In a large bowl, mix together paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme, black pepper, white pepper (if using), cayenne pepper, celery seed, and salt.
2. Grind for Freshness
For a finer texture and more intense flavor, pulse the mixture a few times in a spice grinder or crush it in a mortar and pestle. This step is optional but recommended.
3. Storage
Transfer the seasoning blend to airtight jars using a funnel to avoid spills. Label the jars with the date so you’ll know when it’s fresh.
TOP TIP: Use this Creole seasoning in place of salt in your favorite dishes. It works wonders in crawfish boils, jazzes up twisted taters, and can be sprinkled on meats, vegetables, or even popcorn for an extra zing.
This DIY Creole Seasoning is not just a blend of spices; it’s an embodiment of the festive spirit of Mardi Gras at Universal Studios. It’s a fantastic way to bring the flavors of the celebration into your home kitchen. Experiment with it and don’t be afraid to adjust the ratios to suit your taste.
