Conjure the Magic of the Leaky Cauldron in Your Kitchen!
For my family the holiday season always brings around our yearly Harry Potter marathon. So, what better way to enjoy the magic of the season than making some rich, creamy, and delicious Hot Butterbeer?! Among the three varieties of Butterbeer—hot, frozen, and regular—the hot version which is available at the Leaky Cauldron and the Hopping Pot at Universal Studios, stands out with a deeper and richer butterscotch flavor, warming the heart and soul of both wizards and muggles alike. This hot butterbeer recipe brings the cozy warmth of the Wizarding World’s favorite drink right to your own kitchen, perfect for gathering around the fireplace and enjoying a Very Potter Christmas.
Hot Butterbeer Recipe: Ingredients
For those unfamiliar with Butterbeer, it is a non-alcoholic butterscotch-y, cream soda-esque beverage available in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. To help create this copycat butterbeer recipe, we will need the following ingredients:
- Milk: We like using whole milk, but you can substitute your favorite plant-based milk if you’d like.
- White Hot Chocolate Mix: The delicious “Secret” behind hot butterbeer!
- Butterscotch Syrup: To add a little sweetness and a LOT of Flavor!
- Butterscotch Flavoring: To help intensify the butterscotch flavor without making it too sweet.
- Heavy Cream: The base of the butterbeer topping!

- Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker: For large batches, use the “keep warm” function to keep your Butterbeer warm for as long as needed! The Instant Pot 7 in 1 Electric Pressure Cooker has over 100,000 fantastic Amazon Reviews!
- Whisk: Used to thoroughly combine our ingredients (and to whip up the topping, if you want to do that by hand), you’ll need a whisk! Any old whisk will work just fine, but if you are in the market for a new set, the OYV Silicone Whisk Set is available from Amazon, has amazing reviews, and can be used in all of your non stick pans!
- Bosh Universal Plus Mixer: Do you NEED this? Probably not. Does it make breadmaking and whipping cream a thousand times easier? YES! You can get the mixer here.
- Glass Butterbeer Mug: If you want to get the Glass Butterbeer Mug we used in our photos, you can! It comes with some Butterbeer candies in it (which we did not like), but the mug is gorgeous!
